It featured a different cast and had a limited release in Japan. 27 years since its release, Urara Takano, the very first voice actress for Monkey D. Luffy, has made her One Piece anime debut in this week's episode.
Takano shared a post on social media, revealing that they voiced Joy Boy in Episode 1151, titled "Her and Her Father's Dream! Bonney's Free Future". She shared her excitement about returning to the show after over two decades since her involvement in the One Piece franchise, and that she will give her latest role her best. In One Piece, Joy Boy is a notable figure born in the Great Kingdom 900 years ago, described as the first pirate in history. He also bears a striking resemblance to Luffy, leading some characters to think he was Joy Boy.
Takano played Monkey D. Luffy in the 1998 short film One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzack. The project was produced by Production I.G., not Toei Animation, which is currently involved in the anime, and it does not adapt a specific story from the manga. The film featured only three members of the Straw Hat Pirates, and, as in the Netflix live-action adaptation, Oda was also hands-on in this project.
What Other Projects Did Urara Takano Work On?
Takano is a notable Japanese voice actress who began her career in 1986 and has worked on numerous anime projects, including Sakura Wars, Hunter x Hunter, Komi Can't Communicate, Yu-Gi-Oh, and the Naruto film: Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel. She has also done voice acting for video games such as Kingdom Hearts III, James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing, and Horizon Forbidden West, as well as voice dubbing for popular films. She was the Japanese voice for Bellatrix Lastrange in the Harry Potter films, Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey, Scuttle in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, Raffi in Star Trek: Picard, Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, Maggie Lockwood in Chicago Med, Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon, to name a few.
One Piece is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Netflix. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
