The sci-fi genre has produced plenty of great legacy sequels over the years, but few as strong as Blade Runner 2049. Released in 2017, the film follows a young Blade Runner, K (Ryan Gosling), as he makes a discovery that leads him down a dark trail of secrets straight to Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for thirty years. Ford previously starred in the original Blade Runner movie in 1982. Blade Runner 2049 has been absent from streaming for months now, and while it still evades all the major platforms, it is available to watch with a YouTube Premium subscription.

Blade Runner 2049 earned widespread critical acclaim upon its release, and it was also a hit with the masses. The film currently sits at equally strong scores of 88% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated movies of Ryan Gosling’s career. However, it famously flopped at the box office, grossing only $277 million against a whopping $150 million budget. The large budget left the film with a break-even point of over $300 million, but it’s still one of the more puzzling flops to this day. Ana de Armas and Dave Bautista also have roles in Blade Runner 2049, along with Robin Wright and Jared Leto.

After Ridley Scott directed the first Blade Runner in 1982, he passed directorial duties to sci-fi savant Denis Villeneuve for the legacy sequel. Villeneuve is one of the most acclaimed directors of the 21st Century, with hits such as Arrival, Dune, and Sicario under his belt. He’s also attached to direct the next James Bond movie under Amazon’s guidance, and he’s hard at work on his third and final Dune movie.

Who Will Play the Next James Bond in Denis Villeneuve's Upcoming Movie?

Amazon has yet to announce who will play the next James Bond in Denis Villeneuve’s spy epic. Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing the script, and reports indicate that the studio is looking for a younger 007, one with the longevity to carry the franchise for years to come. This may rule out some fan-favorite stars like Henry Cavill and Idris Elba, but it allows newer talent to step into the spotlight. It has been confirmed that casting for the next James Bond movie won’t commence until he finishes work on Dune: Part Three.

Be sure to watch Blade Runner 2049 through YouTube Premium and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
