'Mad Men's HBO Max Debut Pulls a 'Game of Thrones' With Major Technical Error

Mad Men is available on HBO Max for the first time, but one iconic scene has gone viral for being posted on the platform in an unfinished state.

He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts. For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things Bosch, Mission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider's news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.  He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him. His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan's work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.  Sign in to your Collider account follow Follow followed Followed Like Like Thread Log in Here is a fact-based summary of the story contents: Try something different: Show me the facts Explain it like I’m 5 Give me a lighthearted recap

Few shows of the Peak TV era earned the reputation Mad Men did for obsessive attention to detail. Fans would pause frames to decode cigarette brands, book titles, or office décor for hints into Don Draper’s psyche. Which is why the series’ splashy first-ever 4K rerelease on HBO Max turning into a presentation fiasco feels like a particularly bitter accidental satire.

When Mad Men quietly debuted on the streamer December 1, rewatchers dove back in — and immediately spotted problems. The most infamous surfaced in Season 1’s oyster-puking scene, where Roger Sterling drunkenly vomits in front of clients. But this time around, in HBO Max’s 4K version, viewers could clearly see a technician holding the hose used to simulate the vomit, standing in full view at the edge of the frame.

In the original television airing, the DVDs, Blu-rays, and decade-old HD digital streams, that crew member — and his helper scaffolding the barf hose — were never visible. Someone, somewhere, uploaded an unfinished cut. And the errors didn’t stop there. The oyster-vomit episode, titled “Red in the Face,” was mistakenly listed as another Season 1 installment, “Babylon.”Meanwhile “5G,” Don Draper’s tense drama with his brother, was labeled as “Red in the Face.”

So… Who’s to Blame?

Ironically, it wasn’t actually HBO Max. Sources told outlets like Vulture and The Hollywood Reporter that Lionsgate Television delivered the wrong 4K files to the platform — and the non-4K master files were error-free. Once notified, HBO Max began swapping the files out; Lionsgate is reportedly handling the corrections. Lionsgate has not publicly commented on the mistake. HBO Max, in turn, referred reporters back to Lionsgate. Basically — this ain't our mess. HBO Max heavily hyped the acquisition, touting Mad Men’s first-time availability in 4K. They probably just didn't expect that much detail.

“Mad Men is a great addition to the HBO Max library of iconic content,” Royce Battleman, Warner Bros. Discovery’s EVP of content acquisitions, said last month. “We are thrilled that HBO Max will provide fans the opportunity to enjoy the series in a fresh way with an enhanced 4K viewing experience.”

Enhanced is apparently in the eye of the Episode 107 viewer... Lionsgate was equally triumphant in its statements ahead of launch:

“Mad Men continues to show truly remarkable staying power,” said Jim Packer, Lionsgate’s worldwide TV distribution chief, calling HBO Max “the perfect place to celebrate” one of TV’s defining dramas. Well… they certainly gave fans a new way to look at Mad Men — just probably not the one Matthew Weiner envisioned.

Mad Men is streaming now on HBO Max — additional crew members included.
