Deus Ex fans have been begging for a new game for some time now, and while they finally received a Deus Ex Remastered announcement scheduled for 2026, rumors hinted that a new mainline game in the immersive cyberpunk RPG franchise was possibly in the works.
However, according to a leak (via Reddit) of newly discovered documents from former developers for Deus Ex studio Eidos-Montreal, a new Deus Ex game was reportedly in development at some point but was quietly canceled. The information comes from CV details posted online by a former Lead Game Designer for Eidos-Montreal, as well as the Design Director.
The Lead Game Designer's CV includes an entry for work on an "old protagonist in a Sci-Fi Stealth Adventure Game," which fans have interpreted as most likely being a canceled Deus Ex title. The designer was let go as part of a round of layoffs at Eidos-Montreal, with more possibly to come.
Yet Another New Deus Ex Game Reportedly Canceled
Eidos-Montreal has a long and tumultuous history of trying to get a new Deus Ex title up and running, with corporate restructuring after an acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022. Executives reportedly viewed the series as too niche to justify the financial risk, especially after mixed commercial performance of past titles.
With no green light and nobody willing to fund the project, plans for a full sequel stalled, leaving only Deus Ex: Remastered moving forward. However, there was reportedly another new Deus Ex in development, according to these recent leaks, and that was ALSO canceled, leaving hopes for the future of the franchise effectively dashed.
We're Never Getting A New Deus Ex Game
According to comments made by verified Redditor MikeStrawMedia, who appears to be close to the situation, more layoffs at Eidos-Montreal are expected in the future, and the studio appears to be in dire straits due to corporate mismanagement. As such, Deus Ex fans have all but given up hope on the possibility of an actual new mainline game.
For now, the Deus Ex: Remastered version will have to suffice, as it's likely the only form of new Deus Ex content fans are going to get for the foreseeable future. Things at Eidos-Montreal aren't looking good, and unless a major change happens soon, a new Deus Ex game just doesn't seem to be in the cards.
