The Pete Golding era in Oxford has begun after Ole Miss announced the former defensive coordinator as the team's new head coach following Lane Kiffin's departure for LSU.
"Coach Kiffin and I met yesterday, and he informed us that he is accepting the head coaching position at another school. For our program to begin preparing for its future – both the short and long term, he will be stepping away from the team immediately," athletic director Keith Carter announced.
"With this development, we could not be more excited to announce Pete Golding as the next head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. His tenure will begin immediately as he leads our program in the pursuit of a national title. Today's team meeting was a clear indicator of his ability to galvanize our squad. All of our players and coaches are ecstatic and ready to lock arms for a playoff run."
Golding was set to be introduced in a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 3, but that's no longer happening.

In an unexpected announcement, Golding suggested the spotlight should be on the players as they get set for a College Football Playoff run.
“After reconsidering tomorrow’s activities, I have decided to shift the focus back to where it belongs — the team. Our players have not received the notoriety they deserve for their remarkable accomplishments this season," Golding said. "They have given their all to Ole Miss, and I want to see the spotlight placed on them and the mission in front of us. This time is not about my start as head coach. It is about finishing this season’s story with a playoff run, and we look forward to discussing the next step in that journey following Sunday’s selection announcement."
In the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings, Ole Miss jumped one spot to No. 6 after Texas A&M fell four spots to No. 7 following its loss to Texas.
