2025 has been a great year for horror movies, with one of the biggest coming in the form of 28 Years Later — director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland's return to the zombie franchise without zombies, three decades after the rage virus. Set as a trilogy of films, the second installment was filmed back-to-back with the first in the second half of 2024 and is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.

Ahead of the film's release, Sony Pictures Entertainment have dropped the trailer below, giving fans of the franchise their best look yet at the bloody chaos to come. The trailer reintroduces us to Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson as he tries to control the infected, joined by Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson, the film’s “Alpha” variant. As well as this, the controversial final moments of 28 Years Later are explored further, as Jimmy Crystal's (Jack O’Connell) cult and their violent malevolence are about to come head-to-head with Dr. Kelson.

Taking over from Boyle's directing chair for The Bone Temple is Candyman filmmaker Nia DaCosta, with the original movie's breakout star Cillian Murphy serving as executive producer and Garland returning as writer. This next installment stars Fiennes, Lewis-Parry, and O'Connell, alongside young star Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and more.

What is '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' About?

Although it might not have hit the heights of the original 28 Days Later, last year's legacy sequel was still a worthy follow-up that contained much of the same blend of sociopolitical commentary and visceral horror that made the franchise famous. DaCosta and co will have a tough job living up to the 89% critics' score of last year's film on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, but will certainly hope to improve on the lukewarm 63% awarded by audiences. A synopsis for The Bone Temple reads:

"Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later but turning that world on its head - Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying."

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple debuts in theaters on January 16, 2026.
