Give me a lighthearted recap
We’re still nearly two years away from the release of The Batman Part II, and director Matt Reeves just confirmed a major switch-up in the film’s creative team. Greig Fraser, famed for his work on both Dune movies and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, worked as the cinematographer for The Batman. There have been rumors floating around that Fraser would not return in The Batman Part II, and Matt Reeves confirmed this with a new X post welcoming Erik Messerschmidt as the sequel's new cinematographer. Fraser is busy working on all four of Sam Mendes' Beatles movies to return to Gotham.
Fraser certainly did an outstanding job with The Batman, but Reeves wouldn’t have chosen Messerschmidt as his successor if he wasn’t confident he could do just as well, if not better. Some of the most famous works of his career came just a few years ago when he worked as the cinematographer for The Killer, the 2023 hitman thriller starring Michael Fassbender and directed by David Fincher. He also worked with Michael Mann, the very same year, on Ferrari, the motorsports biopic starring Adam Driver. Reeves knows what he’s doing by selecting Messerschmidt as Fraser’s successor on The Batman Part II.
Still, fans excited for The Batman Part II have to wait quite a while for the film to hit theaters. Currently scheduled for release on October 1, 2027, the film is eyeing early 2026 to begin production. The only confirmed cast members thus far are Robert Pattinson as Batman, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred. Matt Reeves is directing once again with a script he wrote with Mattson Tomlin.
Who Is Going To Be the Villain in The Batman Part II?
It’s yet to be confirmed at this time who Batman will face off against in The Batman Part II. Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb, or The Penguin, will certainly be in opposition to The Dark Knight, but he won’t be the film’s feature villain. Some have speculated about an entirely new Batman villain, like The Court of Owls, while others think Barry Keoghan’s Joker is going to step into the titular villain role. This information likely won’t be released until the film has begun production, possibly even later.
