Try something different:
Show me the facts
Explain it like I’m 5
Give me a lighthearted recap
Square Enix has countless IPs waiting for a revival. They're kind of like Capcom, or another decades-old character factory, in that during any given gaming event, they can trot out an old franchise and instantly garner peerless applause.
Based on a new comment from Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii on YouTube, it seems like something big might be in the works: the sort of thing that would steal all the headlines in a classic E3 show.
Square Enix May Finally Revive Chrono Trigger
It's Been Rumored To Be In The Works For Years
A photo of the party in Chrono Trigger, happily united.
During a broadcast in Japan, Yuji Horii responded to a question about a potential Chrono Trigger remaster/remake/re-release project with a curious reply, saying that he shouldn't be asked about it, but didn't deny its existence. It's a cheeky comment from a boisterous creator, but at this point, it's hard to just deny, deny, deny when it comes to this widely-rumored revival project.
This sort of thing has happened before, and Square Enix fully denied it then, so there's now more hope as a result of these comments. In any case, it's almost like fans are wearing the company down constantly asking about it, like they're going to eventually will it into existence. Maybe we'll need to wait until the third and final part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake project is out.
It's About Time (Get It?)
Dust Off The Epoch Machine
Chrono Trigger is frequently cited as one of the best RPGs of all time, and when it came out, it cemented my love for the genre in general, after Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy got my foot in the door. Even now, it still holds up, thanks to the wonderful character designs from Akira Toriyama, and the creativity of the world(s) it takes place in.
The reason Chrono Trigger is still impactful all these years later is its heart. It has personality in spades, but it also dives deep into the cast and asks you to care about everyone involved, across multiple timelines. Multiple endings, party compositions, and even optional party members are the cherry on top.
While a remake would be risky territory, potentially altering a classic, Square Enix should take their time to get it right. We've waited decades for a revival of Chrono Trigger beyond Chrono Cross, and we can wait a bit more so that it has more time in the oven. Because let's face it, it's probably coming at some point.
Square Enix is sitting on a treasure trove of franchises, including Chrono Trigger. Even if a remake isn't in the cards for the next few years, it would be fantastic if they could re-release it in some form on more platforms.
