An iconic British children's book series, Mr. Men and Little Miss, is set to receive a movie adaptation from the producers of Paddington, bringing beloved characters to life. The Mr. Men book series was created by illustrator Roger Hargreaves in 1971. He later began producing a companion series, titled Little Miss, in 1981. Both have received popular acclaim.

Now, Variety reports that both of Hargreaves' book series are going to be adapted into a film, titled Mr. Men Little Miss. The movie will be produced by Studiocanal and Heyday Films, who previously worked together on the first two Paddington movies. Mr. Men Limited, the company under which Sanrio operates the franchise, will also be joining the upcoming movie project.

While the Paddington movies were one particular collaboration between the studios, Mr. Men Little Miss will be just as important a milestone. Each book creates characters based on singular personality traits, using them to teach moral lessons to children in the process. The two series have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide, with 92 characters having been created.

The movie shares a similar name with an ongoing YouTube miniseries, Mr. Men Little Miss Mini Adventures, which began in June. According to the report, the movie will build on the series, indicating a similar approach. The show has been renewed for season 2, while an untitled series produced by Watch Next Media is also in development.

This is also the first update for a movie based on the children's book franchise in over a decade. In January 2015, it was announced Fox Animation had acquired the film rights for Mr. Men and Little Miss, with no concrete updates since. This latest news about the movie signifies they're no longer involved in its upcoming production.

As of writing, there's no indication as to who is attached to write, direct, or star in the movie. However, it's the latest in Sanrio's expansion of the franchise since acquiring it in 2011. This has included its expansion into fashion and toys. Its entertainment development beyond books has been sparse, but this movie aims to build on what exists.

While there are no details yet about what a Mr. Men and Little Miss movie will look like, the decades of books and dozens of characters that could be involved means there's plenty to pull from. So long as the film adaptation stays true to the lessons found in the original series, it could be a major franchise success.
