Box office projections are in for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, and its opening weekend is expected to make half of what the original made.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2's debut weekend projections have been revealed. The upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which is set to debut on December 5, is a sequel to Blumhouse's 2023 video game adaptation. Director Emma Tammi and writer Scott Cawthon are returning alongside stars Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio.

Per Variety, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is projected to gross between $35 and $40 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office. Even if it hits the upper bound of its range, it will earn just half of the domestic debut of the 2023 movie, which had a 3-day gross of $80 million.

The original movie's debut is even more impressive because of the fact that it had a more compromised theatrical release than 2025's Five Nights at Freddy's 2. The 2023 movie managed to have an unusually robust debut in spite of the fact that it was available on the streaming platform Peacock on the same weekend it was released in theaters.

This disparity between the two movies' domestic debuts does not necessarily mean that the sequel is destined to earn half of the original movie's overall worldwide gross of $291.6 million. While Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is not benefitting from the advantage its theatrical-only debut has given it, it has other advantages that could give it a stronger performance over the coming weeks.

For instance, while the original Five Nights at Freddy's had a stellar debut, it capsized during its sophomore weekend with a staggering week-on-week drop of 76.2%. This was likely the case because it debuted over Halloween weekend, which placed its sophomore weekend in early November.

While horror movies have year-round success, they tend to perform most poorly in the immediate wake of Halloween, when general audiences have had their appetite for horror sated by the holiday. Five Nights at Freddy's 2's early December release means that it could have the exact opposite long-term fortunes, as the holiday season tends to foster slow-and-steady hits.

Additionally, while Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will face major competition from Avatar: Fire and Ash when it debuts on December 19, its sophomore weekend is relatively clear of new wide releases, with the only direct competitor being the Christmas slasher remake Silent Night, Deadly Night, which is getting a more limited release.

Even if it does only earn half of the original's gross, making $145 million worldwide, the reported budget of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is only $36 million. This most likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $90 million, which is a milestone that it should easily surpass.
