Directed by Kurtis David Harder, the film premiered at the Brooklyn Horror Film festival before landing on Shudder in 2023.
After amassing a steady following on Shudder, Influencer is now poised to land on Netflix in the U.S. on December 1. The film, which Harder co-wrote with Tesh Guttikonda, will join the streamer's healthy library of titles across the horror and thriller genres, and all the overlap between them.
The movie follows struggling social media influencer Madison (Emily Tennant) as she meets the mysterious CW (Cassandra Naud) while on a solo backpacking trip in Thailand. Though Madison is initially intrigued by CW's more carefree way of living, it soon becomes clear that CW's interest has a dark side. Rory J. Saper, Justin Sams, Sara Canning, and Raul Spurrier also star.
Following Influencer's festival premiere and subsequent release on Shudder, critics have praised the tense psychological horror. The film enjoys a stunning 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise aimed at the film's smart script, genuine scares, and its compelling messaging.
Though the audience response was softer, with a more lukewarm 68% Popcornmeter score, the horror movie has evidently been a popular offering on Shudder, with a sequel called Influencers about to arrive. Premiering in July at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival, the sequel will land on Shudder on December 12.
Though it's still early days for the sequel, Influencers currently ranks even higher on Rotten Tomatoes than its predecessor, sporting a rare 100% score from 15 reviews. This score is subject to change, of course, as more reviews are added.
For those who enjoy Influencer and want to see more from Harder, the filmmaker directed 2019's Spiral, which is also on Shudder. Harder also produced V/H/S/94 (2021), a record-breaking Shudder original, suggesting he enjoys a strong relationship with the horror-focused streaming service.
Shudder remains a top destination for horror streaming content, recently debuting Good Boy to strong reviews and major viewership success.
With Influencer about to drop on Netflix, though, it's about to be seen by a much wider audience. This will not only give Harder a boost, but it could help to further propel stars like Naud and Tennant to greater heights as actors.
The film's Netflix availability will also be a boon to Influencers. Viewers who enjoy the social commentary and unsettling atmosphere of the first film could end up feeling compelled to sign up for Shudder to see how the story continues. This, in turn, would mean a third installment in the horror franchise may not be off the table.
