The decision marks a significant shift in the program's long-term plan after it previously felt the Buffs were likely to burn Lewis' redshirt in what has turned into a lost season.
Sanders also announced that senior quarterback Kaidon Salter will start at quarterback against Kansas State in his final collegiate game. Coach Prime detailed what went into the decision and how it was ultimately his choice, not Lewis'.

"I want what's best for the kid, his family and this wonderful university. I think for the program it's best for everyone, but mainly it's great for him."
Lewis, a former top-50 national recruit and the highest-profile signee in Colorado's 2025 class, had been competing for the starting job throughout the offseason. Sanders acknowledged that the freshman was not thrilled about the news, but seems to be accepting the decision.
"I'm not going to say he was happy," Sanders admitted. "Julian wants to play, he wants to compete and I love him for that."
With Lewis out, Salter has one last opportunity to prove himself to the professional ranks.
