The Boston Red Sox have been synonymous with trades and trade rumors the last year. While the current situation has Jarren Duran the subject of rumors, they've also made a bunch of trades this offseason.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Johan Oviedo, and Caleb Durbin were all trade pickups. But, there was one trade, the infamous Rafael Devers deal, that isn't aging well at all.
As Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report notes, even though it's not been a full year, the Devers trade to the San Francisco Giants will keep haunting the Red Sox for years to come.
Red Sox botched Rafael Devers' situation, trade will haunt Boston for years
"While Rafael Devers probably could have handled things in a better fashion," Kelly writes, "the Red Sox clearly bungled their communication with him regarding moving him off of third base to sign Alex Bregman last winter, and then trying to get him to learn first base when Triston Casas was lost for the season."
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAs Kelly notes, Devers isn't absolved from blame for this trade, but the Red Sox were the main reason why Devers is now playing on the West Coast.
This trade had the Red Sox landing Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, and James Tibbs III while getting out of Devers' entire contract.

While that extra money is nice, after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, the offense is much worse off than it was last year.
Harrison was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers for Caleb Durbin, and hicks was dumped in a deal to the Chicago White Sox. Add on that Tibbs and Bello are, as Kelly writes, "a particularly impactful prospect," and this was a disaster.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter messing up the relationship with Devers, the Red Sox haven't been able to rebound just yet, and still sorely miss his presence in the lineup. The Red Sox are in a far worse spot than they were last year.
This trade will haunt the Red Sox for a while until they can find a slugger to replace Devers' production in the lineup. And even if they do, the return they got for Devers doesn't look to be nearly impactful enough to justify this deal.
