There have been plenty of iterations of Mary Shelley's iconic character Frankenstein over the years, but precious few that center around the Bride of Frankenstein, a character with exceptional thematic depth and conflicts to explore. Maggie Gyllenhaal will bring a genre-blended version of the character to the big screen with The Bride!, starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley in the title role.
Set in 1930s Chicago, The Bride! sees Frankenstein's monster (Christian Bale) seek out a brilliant yet mad doctor (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him similarly "born from the dead", setting off a riotous Gothic romance narrative. The official trailer for The Bride! promises a blend of action, social commentary, and even humor as the two monsters run amok in Depression-Era Chicago, which has yielded some seemingly justified comparisons to a truly foundational neo-noir crime classic.
The Bride! Is Drawing Comparisons To Bonnie And Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde 1967
The setting and notion of a couple on a crime spree naturally conjures the image of Bonnie and Clyde, the notorious real-life American outlaws of the 1930s who terrorized the South in the same era as infamous criminals like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd. That was intentional on Gyllenhaal's part of course, but more importantly than the concept is the fact that she has apparently captured the tone and style of the 1967 highly fictionalized biopic Bonnie and Clyde.
Starring film legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the eponymous criminals, Bonnie and Clyde is considered one of the most important movies in the crime genre, and was a key kick-starter for the American New Wave of cinema that began in the mid-1960s. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards (winning two), and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1992.
The importance of director Arthur Penn's crime epic can't be overstated, as the movie's level of violence and counterculture-heavy messaging of the 1960s inspired Hollywood in general to be more liberal in the portrayal of sex and violence in movies. First reactions for The Bride! indicate that Gyllenhaal has managed to capture many of the elements that made Bonnie and Clyde so influential, which should mean it's a truly excellent modern crime film.
Early Reactions For The Bride! Are Outstanding
It's a bit too early for Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic scores for The Bride! but the first reactions from critics have started to roll in, and the reception has been extremely positive. There's plenty of praise for the performances of the two Academy Award nominees at the center of the movie, along with Gyllenhaal's bold, adventurous decision-making behind the camera.

Part of the appeal of the movie is that it explores the identity and power of a character long thought-of as secondary, which should accentuate the Bonnie and Clyde crime thriller elements to create something inventive and captivating.
